A Hill Top Fort Of Udaipur, Rajasthan – AKA SajjanGarh Fort

The monsoon Palace is quite like Cinderella or Rapunzel type fairy tale castle situated in the city of Udaipur, Rajasthan. It lies about 5 km to the west of the Udaipur. The very first thing came into my mind is “why this fort is called Monsoon Palace?” May be in the 19th century the drainage system of the city was so pathetic like Kolkata that the Maharaja had to build  his palace at this height. Jokes apart, the truth is that Sajjan singh built this palace to watch out monsoon clouds. Although the local people believe that the king wanted to see his ancestral home, Chittaurgarh. Which was previously owned by his family. After that it became the hunting home. Nowadays Government uses it  as a communication center.

Jagmandir from monsoon Palace.Jag Mandir was built on an island in the Lake Pichola. The other name of it is”Lake Garden Palace”. Its construction is credited to three Maharanas of the Sisodia Rajputs of Mewar kingdom

The view of the Fateh Sagar Lake is quite beautiful from this palace. The golden glow of the palace is cinematic at evening when it is illuminated. The panoramic view of the other city palaces and lakes, specially the Pichola lake is fantabulous.

A young American tourist went on a guided tour of a creepy old castle in England. “How did you enjoy it?” The guide asked when it was over.
“It was great,” the tourist replied, “but I was afraid I was going to see a ghost in some of those dark passageways.”
“No need to worry,” said the guide “I’ve never seen a ghost in all the time I’ve been here.”
“How long is that?” the tourist asked.

“Oh, about 300 years!!!!!!!!!!!”

The Monsoon Palace was built for Maharaj Sajjan Singh of Mewar dynasty in 1884. He planned to build a 9 story building. But his dream couldn’t fulfilled because of his uncertain and untimely death at the age of only 26.The ground floor of the palace was used for house killing prisoners and enemies who were poisoned and hanged. Later his successor Maharana Fateh Singh completed the construction of the palace. When Udaipur was attacked by the Scindians in 1764, this palace was used as an ordnance dump place.
