General Facts about Lakshadweep
While I started writing this blog, a huge number of data was moving around on my little head. It is difficult to compile but I have tried my level best to provide quality information which will help you later. so here I come up with the general facts of Lakshadweep which includes everything , from location to occupation.
‘LAKSHADWEEP’ – “A hundred thousands of islands”(derived from an ancient Indian language, Sanskrit), which was formerly known as Laccadives, Minicoy and Aminidivi islands. Presently kavaratti is the capital.
This smallest union territory of India is situated in the Laccadive sea on the southwest coast of Kerala, India.
Co-ordinate :- 106 degree N and 72.6 degree E with area of 32 sq-km.
Official Language:- Jeseri is the main dialect, they use except Minicoy islanders. But Malayalam is their written language. Though in Minicoy they speak Mahl and their written form is Divehi.
Islands:- It comprises of almost 36 islands, in which…….
12 atolls, 03 reefs, 05 submerged banks, 10 inhabited islands- Kavaratti, Agatti, Amini, Kadmat, Kiltan, Chetlat. Bitra, Andrott, Kalpeni, Minicoy.04 newly formed islets(small islands) and almost 06 are open for the outside visitors.
Population:– With 271 people(as per 2011 census) Bitra is the less populated island. Androth is the biggest with almost 12k people. The uninhabited island is Bangaram with only 61 person. And 93 % people are muslim.
Occupation:- The main occupation is fishing. The other things they do for their living are coconut cultivation and coconut oil production. And the organic oils are the best product which you can gift to anyone. I bought almost 5 liters for gift. But this is quite costly than the normal one. I will suggest you buy the organic product from the factory yourself. It can be used for cooking food too. Other industries are coir industry and fast growing tourism.
At first cultivators divide those coconuts into two parts.
Then they put them under the sun to dry.
After that these are sent to the factories.
Then sent to the furnace.
With the help of this machine oil is being produced.
Oil filter to take out the quality organic oil.
Collecting the fishes, they got with their fishing net.
Travel Season:- The best season is from October to May. May to Sep is rainy season. The samudram package remains closed as the sea gets rough. But this time, staying in the resorts of Bangaram and Agatti is quite pleasant. In monsoon season the only way for the tourists is taking flight to be there. In this time only fewer ships are available for the islanders only. But a special Helicopter service is always available for any emergency to transfer you.
Climate:- Pleasant tropical. Summer temperature from 20 to 30 degree and winter from 18 to 28 degree approx.
Cuisine:- What I have seen, they generally love to eat tuna fish and rice. They are non vegetarian mainly.
Culture:- Kokali and Panichakali are the two popular folk arts. Lava dance of Minicoy is also famous.
